Celebrating Excellence: Concrete Structures and Floors Featured in The Concrete Society Awards 2025

We are thrilled to announce that Concrete Structures and Floors has been recognised in the prestigious Concrete Society Awards 2025, with our work on the Llyn Celyn PMF Flood Conveyance Scheme in North Wales being Highly Commended.

This landmark project, delivered in partnership with Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) and Welsh Water, showcases innovation, resilience, and collaborative excellence in civil engineering—all while set within the sensitive environment of Snowdonia National Park.

Project Overview

The Llyn Celyn safety scheme was a complex, high-risk project designed to protect the dam and surrounding communities from extreme flooding. The construction of a new 260m reinforced concrete auxiliary spillway—complete with a culvert, overflow weir, and innovative tipping gates—required meticulous planning, innovative concrete solutions, and exceptional teamwork.

Despite the remote location and challenging weather conditions, the project was delivered 13 weeks ahead of schedule and achieved cost savings of over £500,000 on the concrete structure alone.

Our Role: Delivering Excellence in Concrete Construction

As the reinforced concrete subcontractor, Concrete Structures and Floors was instrumental in the successful delivery of this critical infrastructure. Key contributions included:

• Logistical mastery: Overcoming the challenge of a remote site located an hour from the nearest batching plant, we collaborated closely with concrete supplier Cambrian to optimise mix designs and pour sequences, achieving pours of up to 350m³ per day.
• Innovative concrete solutions: We worked with C16/20 and C40/50 strength-class concretes, incorporating Sika admixtures to ensure consistency, durability, and performance in demanding conditions.
• Phased construction approach: The spillway was built in five carefully planned phases, ensuring flood resilience even during construction.
• Aesthetic integration: Using Reckli formliners, we delivered a patterned concrete finish that blends seamlessly with the natural landscape, reducing the need for stone cladding by 75%.

Sustainability & Community Impact

The project was driven by a sustainable mindset, with “no-build” solutions explored wherever possible. The spillway was designed to minimise environmental impact while enhancing public safety through improved flood conveyance and valve upgrades.

Karen Morris, Senior Project Manager at Welsh Water, commended the team’s technical understanding, stakeholder engagement, and delivery quality, highlighting the project’s success in meeting complex demands.
